This is the patch that I made for my performance. It’s probably my most complex patch to date. It’s not doing a lot of complicated things but there’s a lot going on inside and making it all work together was the hardest part.

The performance happened twice and it went as it should’ve! A few comments were made about occasionally not knowing what to do, but I think these are fair comments. There either needs to be instructions given prior to the performance or a way to clearly instruct viewers what to do during the performance.

A last minute addition to the project. I will want to display some text all of the viewers/participants. This is what it’ll look like.

I’m slightly worried that there’ll be too much text on screen, but not sure at the moment. So far I have the channel number being displayed in green in the top-right corner, the FM station displayed in the middle for a for seconds and then this text occasionally popping up. We’ll see…

It’s funny how much we take things for granted. When something’s happening you don’t stop to think about the impact it’s happening on your life or what it’d be like if some vital part was missing. Tak, for example, the building of the Bull Ring. The new Bull Ring was officially opened in 2003 (I think). To this day I can’t imagine what that area looked like before that development was built. This saddens me, not because I used to like the old Bull Ring - I was probably around 15 when developmetn started - but because it’s completely gone from history. Somethhing similar is happening with television. As I child I don’t remembver much about my experiences with television. I remember not being able to decipher the first few seconds of a Yogi Bear movie due to the tape being old. I also remember, when you first bought a TV, that you had to tune the channels in and programme it yourself. It’s much like experiences with Radio. Sometimes when tuning you’d occasionally find an overlap of channels and be able to watch - for example - channel 5 whilst listnening to the audio of ITV. All of these old TVs and ways of transmitting were slaves to signals lots of external factors, such as bad weather, cheap arials and poor recording equipment. Now, however, we’re at on the brink of a change in the way we watch TV and listen to Radio. Digital television and Digital Radio have been available in the UK for a number of years. Up until now, at least with television, switching to digital television has been an optional luxury. It doesn’t suffer from crackling signals, noisy picture quality or any other “qualities” that could be identified with analogue television. It even offers other bonus thigns like an intergrated TV guide and a pleathora of channels (in excess of 100). This switch to digital transmission is now being forced upon us. I’m attempting to write a good description of this piece, but it’s proving harder than I thought it would be. Here’s my notes so far:

I am interested in the errors and glitches created by digital technology. SO the people I grew up with the tie I greq up in was one of an analogue era. We were all used to the noise and hisses that came when you turned on the TV and were even affected by the weather.We were all used to this. However, as time has progressed we’ve started to see a shift from analogue technoloies to digital technologies. WIth this coomes clearer pictures, crisper sound and a lot less noise and distortion in general. However, what is also being lost is a part of our upbringing and history. This performance is a revisint of our childhood and a revisiting of things that we will soon not have the chance to see. We allow the audience to cycle through their history that will soon be erased.

Here’s what happens when you hook an advanced version of my earlier patch to an Arduino with four potentiometers.

There’s a slight sync delay between to two videos but hopefully you get the idea. I’m going to house these knobs inside a box and then during the performance people will be able to twiddle them themselves.

And this is the output video. Right now I’ve got a random number generator choosing the videos but I’ll hook this up to a button on the controller somehow.

The lines are generated by [pix_aging] and the distortion is generated by using [#redim] in Gridflow
